In the third quarter of 2019, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency finalized 158 settlement agreements with companies across the United States -- representing a 50 percent increase from the second quarter, during which only 106 penalties were issued. The financial penalties include a $50 million fine for violations of the Clean Air Act and a $500,000 hit for abuses of the Toxic Substances and Control Act. This significant rise in actions for violations of environmental laws may mean that the EPA is stepping up enforcement efforts.
