Lockout/Tagout – 29 CFR 1910.147  Do I need to provide lockout/tagout training? Any employer in general industry whose employees are exposed to moving machinery during servicing or maintenance must provide Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) training. Employees who are expected to perform servicing and maintenance must be provided with “authorized person” training, while those who do not perform servicing or maintenance but may use machinery that undergoes maintenance must be provided with “affected person” training. What is required for lockout/tagout training? Authorized employees must be trained to use procedures in order to remove all energy sources from a machine before performing maintenance. Generally, these employees will need to understand the types of energy (electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, etc.) in machinery at their workplace, as well as methods to isolate those energy sources. Affected employees need to be trained to recognize when LOTO is being performed on their equipment, and not to attempt startup of that equipment during LOTO. The employer must certify that authorized and affected employees have successfully completed training. A record of the certification should be maintained by the employer. How often must I offer lockout/tagout training? Training must be provided before employees are assigned to duties that involve LOTO. There is no specific interval for retraining, but employers must provide retraining if employees show a disregard for LOTO procedures or there is a change in the machinery that would affect LOTO procedures. #OSHA, #WorkerSafety, #BringingSafetyBack, #SafetyFirst
